Tough to Open & Close Your Leather Jacket Zipper? Open and Close with Ease Using These 5 Fixes!

By: James Jordan

5 Ways To Get That Zipper Operating Smooth Again!

  1. Lubricate the Zipper: Apply a small amount of lubricant like beeswax or petroleum jelly along the length of the zipper teeth to help it glide more smoothly.

  2. Clean the Zipper: Dirt and debris can cause zippers to stick, so clean the zipper with a mild soap and water solution and then dry it thoroughly.

  3. Use Pliers: Gently grip the slider with a pair of pliers and wiggle it up and down to loosen it. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, or you may break the slider.

  4. Apply Heat: Use a hairdryer or a warm iron to apply heat to the zipper tape. This will cause it to expand slightly and loosen the teeth, allowing the zipper to glide more easily.

  5. Replace the Slider: If the slider is damaged or worn out, it may be necessary to replace it. Simply remove the old slider and attach a new one in its place, using pliers to secure it in position.

FUN FACT!

The zipper was invented in the late 19th century by Whitcomb Judson, but it was unreliable and failed to gain popularity. Gideon Sundback improved on the design in 1913, creating the modern zipper with interlocking teeth. The first modern zippers were used on boots and tobacco pouches before being incorporated into clothing. Today, zippers are a ubiquitous fastening mechanism used in various applications around the world.
